Impregnation
Flame Retardants (UKADUR)
Flame retardant papers represent another safety-relevant area. Schill+Seilacher can fall back here on a multitude of active substances which have made it possible to make products specially optimised for paper treatment, available for almost any application. In general, these are fibres for insulation as well as paper and cardboard, which are used in buildings on a long-term basis or are introduced there for a limited period of time but with public traffic, e. g. posters.
Only in exceptional cases are papers or boards equipped directly in the paper machine, because this results in a high circulation load with the non-retained active substances. This is why impregnation processes - in the paper machine also the size press - are the means of choice.
Our development laboratory uses building material standards and classifications for orientation of effectiveness, even if the final application is not in this area. Reliable results can only be obtained with standardized and approved test methods according to DIN 4102 (EN 13501-1) or Electric Bruleur, even if the so-called lighter test is widely used for flash tests.
The success of a flame retardant treatment of paper or cardboard depends on the porosity and degree of sizing of the material as well as the thickness of the test specimens. For this reason, special products are available for particularly low-absorbent base materials, which increase penetration or secure sizing as required.
